ENGLAND-PARAGUAY: Players' Quotes

Frank LAMPARD (ENG), Budweiser Man of the Match
We are happy with the result obviously as the first game is very important to win and we are happy especially with the first-half performance. I know we suffered in the second half and that this is partly due to the conditions playing in the middle of the day in that heat. Paraguay are a very strong team and the heat is difficult for an England team to deal with and the opening game of a World Cup is always a tough game. The start of the game is not really much of a problem but it takes a lot of energy out of our legs in the second. We sat deep then and let them back into the game but we defended very well.
Rio FERDINAND (ENG)
Three points is the most important thing. We wanted to start the tournament well and a draw or a loss would not have been good enough. Luckily today we managed to get the win. We scored the goal quite early and we managed to hang on to that. Today was about getting the three points. Paul Robinson (ENG)
It was very hot, which is why we didn’t play as well as we probably could have. A win’s a win, though. In the first half, we played well, but after the break we weren’t too good. We’re very happy, though – we’re pleased with the win and we’ve put ourselves in an ideal position for the upcoming matches.
John TERRY (ENG)
We watched Friday’s matches and we saw that anything can happen. It’s always tough to make a good start to a tournament, but that’s just what we’ve done and we’ve got the three points.
David BECKHAM (ENG)
In the first half, we played well, but in the second, we started to have a few problems with the heat. We wanted to play well right from the off, and we managed that. I really don’t think it was wrong to play as fast and as full on as we did at the beginning – that’s what English teams do. If we carry on playing like we did, we’ll soon be through to the next round. We’re not worried about the poor second half. I’m really pleased with the way I played, but of course I can and will play a lot better than this.
Nelson VALDEZ (PAR)
We had our chances, but we can play a lot better than we did. The atmosphere was great. It’s a shame that the really clear opportunity I had at the end of the first half didn’t go in, otherwise we’d have had a real chance of getting a point out of the game or maybe even winning it. Despite the fact that we lost, I still believe we can get into the Round of 16 and face Germany.
Aldo BOBADILLA (PAR)
It’s very sad that Justo Villar got injured - he pulled a muscle. Now we really have to improve our level of play if we’re going to go through to the next round. I think that we played the better football and had more overall possession.
Roque SANTA CRUZ (PAR)
We can’t afford to waste any time being miserable about today’s defeat. I think we played well, and we’ve also got some good players in our squad. We improved in the second half, and we can build on that.k at our lack of possession in the second half.
