10 June 2006
The FIFA World Cup™ will almost certainly celebrate its 2,000th goal over the next four weeks.
The opening two fixtures, which produced eight goals, brought the milestone closer into view and added to the grand total which before the start of this tournament stood at 1,916 from 708 games, an average of 2.71 goals per game.
The edition with most goals scored was France 98 (171 – average 2.67) but then that was the first time with a 64-game competition. In 2002 161 goals were scored with an average of 2.52. The tournament with highest number of goals per game was Switzerland 1954 when 140 goals came from 26 games – a remarkable average of 5.38.
