The second day of top-class action in Germany sees two of the hot favourites, Argentina and England, and two FIFA World Cup™ newcomers, Trinidad and Tobago and Côte d'Ivoire, take centre stage, as Groups B and C get underway in Dortmund and Hamburg.
The matches
Trinidad and Tobago-Sweden, 18:00 (CET), Dortmund, Group B
Group winners ahead of England at Korea/Japan 2002, Sweden will be eager to register a victory over Leo Beenhakker's men, who will be playing without pressure in their first-ever FIFA World Cup match.
England-Paraguay, 15:00, Frankfurt, Group B
Both these tournament regulars are missing a key player as they get their campaigns up and running, with Wayne Rooney still on the road to recovery and Jose Cardozo ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Neither can afford to mourn those losses, however, as the result of this encounter could be decisive in a tight group.
Argentina-Côte d'Ivoire, 21:00, Hamburg, Group C
Unceremoniously knocked out in the first round four years ago, Argentina again find themselves in a tough group, but will be desperate to erase those memories and prove they deserve their favourites' tag. The African vice-champions are unlikely to make life easy for them, though, despite being rookies on world football’s biggest stage.
The duel
Goalscorers, club-mates and friends, Didier Drogba and Hernan Crespo will be the best of enemies when they lock horns on Saturday. The Ivorian struck 12 Premiership goals for Chelsea this season compared to his Argentine rival’s tally of ten, and whichever of the duo leaves his mark in Hamburg could help ease his team's passage into the next round.
Past meetings
England 3-0 Paraguay, 18 June 1986, Mexico The two sides have met just once before at the FIFA World Cup, England easing to a 3-0 victory in their Round of 16 encounter at Mexico 1986. Gary Lineker netted twice that day on his way to becoming the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
The question
Will 'RoboCrouch' get his chance to dance? Having famously revived the robot dance, Peter Crouch will be aiming to push Rooney's recovery off the back pages for at least a day. The giant Liverpool striker excelled in England's warm-up games, but Paraguay are sure to provide a much stiffer test.
The figures 17: Aged just 17 years and three months, England's Theo Walcott is the tournament's youngest player.
10: England's last ten goals in the FIFA World Cup were scored in the first half.
2: Argentina have twice played their opening game on 10 June, and on both occasions they went on to lift the trophy (1978 and 1986).
Birthdays
Barcelona's legendary Czech-Spanish-Hungarian striker Laszlo Kubala, was born on this day in 1927 (died 17 May 2002). Former stars Carlo Ancelotti (ITA) and David Platt (ENG) celebrate their birthdays today.
A FIFA World Cup blast from the past
Italy 2-1 Czechoslovakia, 10 June 1934, Rome. The final of the second FIFA World Cup saw two European sides battle for the title in Rome. Coached by the fabled Vittorio Pozzo, Italy found themselves trailing with 15 minutes left, before snatching an equaliser and then winning through Angelo Schiavio's extra-time goal.
Not a lot of people know this
Legendary Argentine striker Gabriel Batistuta (56 goals in 78 games) put in a surprise appearance at the Albiceleste training camp on Thursday. "It was a nice gesture and it meant the world to the lads," gushed coach Jose Pekerman.
Having a laugh
Sven-Goran Eriksson, England coach: "It's been 40 years since we last won a big tournament. The moment has come."
