It was a very open game with lots of goals. Obviously we’re very satisfied with the performance, but with it being the opening game we were a little nervous both before and during the match. Because of that we made a couple of mistakes and gave away two goals. I’d also like to thank the crowd who were right behind us the whole game and urged us on when we were struggling.
As for Michael Ballack’s absence, all I can say is that it was a decision that just had to be made. The doctor warned me that if he played, there might be consequences, and we didn’t want to risk it. It doesn’t bother me at all that he said he wanted to play. Every player should be anxious to get out there on the pitch. I’m sure he’ll be back for the Poland game.
Costa Rica’s goals came from some pretty basic errors. Goals are only scored when someone makes a mistake. We’re working hard to up our game in midfield and in defence, where they caught us off guard twice.
Alexandre GUIMARAES (CRC)
We knew that today’s game, quite apart from the result, would tell us what our chances were of progressing in the next couple of matches. Judging by our performance today I think we’ve got a really good chance of qualifying for the next round. Our hopes are still very high, the team is going to get better and we’ll keep our chances alive.
As for the game, I think Germany were very powerful and took their chances. I wouldn’t say we made lots of mistakes. Two of their goals were absolutely brilliant. We played much better than in our warm-up games and that’s important. I wasn’t that surprised our goals came through the middle of the German defence. We knew exactly where to attack and we capitalised on that brilliantly. I should also add that Germany dealt us some psychological blows at key times. Every time we scored, they came straight back and did the same to us.
It hurts because we wanted to put in a good performance and get some points on the board. We reached some of our objectives in the end I suppose. We played well, but have nothing to show for it, and I’ll repeat what I said to begin with - if we keep playing like that we’ve got every chance of beating Ecuador and Poland.
